Headache and Migraine Physiotherapy

If you’ve been told that headaches or migraines are something you simply have to manage with medication, you’re not alone — but there may be more that can be explored. Many people benefit from a clearer understanding of their headache type, contributing factors, and what can be addressed through targeted treatment.

We believe that people experiencing headaches and migraines deserve to understand their symptoms, the likely mechanisms involved, and the range of management options available to them. A thorough, skilled assessment is essential to guide appropriate care.

A Specialized Approach to Headache Care

Emily has completed additional postgraduate training in headache and migraine management and is a Level 2 trained Watson Headache Practitioner. This approach, developed by Australian physiotherapist Dr Dean Watson, focuses on the role of the upper cervical spine and nervous system sensitivity in certain headache and migraine presentations.

Importantly, not all headaches are the same — and not all headaches are appropriate for this approach. Your assessment will consider a range of possible contributing factors, including:

  • Upper cervical spine function

  • Nervous system sensitisation

  • Hormonal influences

  • Sleep and fatigue

  • Stress and load

  • Neck and shoulder function

  • Past injury or trauma

  • Symptom patterns and triggers

Care is guided by your individual presentation, rather than a one-size-fits-all method.

What Makes this Different from General Neck Treatment?

Headaches and migraines are complex neurological conditions, often involving much more than muscle tightness or joint stiffness. Many people experience symptoms such as:

  • Sensitivity to light or sound

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Visual disturbance

  • Fatigue

  • Cognitive fog

  • Sleep disruption

For some people, aggressive manual therapy, forceful manipulation, or generic strengthening programs can actually worsen symptoms rather than help.

The Watson approach uses gentle, highly specific techniques to assess and treat the upper cervical spine in a way designed to avoid overloading the nervous system. Treatment aims to improve tolerance, reduce symptom sensitivity, and build long-term self-management rather than relying on ongoing hands-on care.

What to Expect from Treatment

Your initial sessions focus on:

  • Careful assessment of symptom patterns

  • Identifying whether your presentation is appropriate for this approach

  • Monitoring how your symptoms respond to gentle techniques

  • Education around contributors and triggers

  • Introducing simple self-management strategies early

If there is no meaningful change in symptoms, we will discuss this honestly and help guide you toward other appropriate avenues of care rather than continuing ineffective treatment.

Our aim is not to create long-term dependency on appointments, but to support you toward greater understanding, confidence, and independence in managing your headaches or migraines.

If you’re ready to explore your options

If headaches or migraines are interfering with your quality of life, an assessment may help clarify what’s contributing to your symptoms and whether physiotherapy may be appropriate for you.

You’re welcome to book an appointment or contact the clinic if you’d like to ask questions before getting started.
