Post-Natal Rehabilitation
During pregnancy, your body undergoes a remarkable range of physical, emotional, and biological changes to support the growth and development of your baby.
After delivery, it’s completely normal for recovery to take time. There is no set timeline, and healing looks different for every body. At For Her Physiotherapy, we support women in the postnatal period to restore function, rebuild strength, and safely work toward their individual movement and exercise goals, while also addressing any concerns that may arise following pregnancy and childbirth.
What We Assess at a 6‑Week Postnatal Check
Your 6‑week postnatal physiotherapy assessment typically includes:
-
An internal vaginal assessment to assess pelvic floor tone, strength, endurance and coordination. We will also assess the integrity of the pelvic floor muscle attachments and identify any laxity of the vaginal walls post delivery
-
Assessment of abdominal muscle function and identification of separation
-
Assessment of postural alignment, movement patterns and general muscle strength if indicated
-
Screening for pelvic, back, hip, or abdominal pain
-
Readiness to return to exercise, work, and daily activities
Based on your assessment, we work collaboratively with you to create a tailored postnatal rehabilitation program that aligns with your body, lifestyle, and goals. This program is designed to restore strength, function, and confidence, support a safe and sustainable return to exercise or sport, improve mobility and day-to-day movement, and reduce symptoms such as leakage, heaviness, or pain.
Whether you are early in your postnatal journey or months or even years after birth, postnatal physiotherapy can play a key role in helping you move well, exercise confidently, and feel supported in your postpartum body.
Common Postnatal Concerns We Treat
Postnatal physiotherapy can support a wide range of concerns that may arise after birth, including:
-
Pelvic floor weakness, heaviness, or prolapse symptoms
-
Urinary or bowel leakage
-
Abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti)
-
Pelvic, back, hip, or abdominal pain
-
Pain with return to exercise or daily activities
-
Breast-related concerns such as blocked milk ducts and nipple trauma
Where appropriate, we may use modalities such as therapeutic ultrasound and low-level laser therapy to assist with the management of blocked ducts, inflammation, and nipple trauma, alongside education and hands-on support.
Structured Programs for Your Exercise Goals
We provide personalized, progressive rehabilitation to support your return to exercise after birth, from everyday movement to running and high-intensity sport, guided by evidence-based frameworks to help your pelvic floor, abdominal wall, and whole body tolerate load safely and confidently.
Pessary Fittings in the Postnatal Period
For some women, additional support during the postnatal period, particularly while breastfeeding, when hormonal changes can affect tissue support, can make recovery and return to exercise more comfortable. We offer postnatal pessary fittings to help support the pelvic organs, reduce symptoms of heaviness or prolapse, and build confidence with higher-impact or strength-based activities.
Pessaries may be used short- or long-term and are fitted and reviewed by our specially trained physiotherapists.
Mastitis and Breast Care
Mastitis is a common and often painful breastfeeding condition that can cause breast pain, swelling, redness, and flu-like symptoms, affecting both comfort and feeding. Physiotherapy can support recovery by helping reduce pain and inflammation, improve breast drainage, and address contributing factors such as feeding positions and muscle tension.
At For Her Physiotherapy, care is gentle, evidence-based, and tailored to your individual needs.
